Level 3 Media Studies:
The inaugural Level 3 Media Studies class hit the road running, with a 1-minute, 1-shot video presentation in the film noir genre. It was a chance for the class to have a play with the camera and to create a moment of shadow, warped angles and dodgy characters. Here are two presentations from the group

Level 2 Media Studies:
Yet again Level 2 Media Studies started off the year with a 1-minute, 1-shot self-portrait video presentation. The students had to decide how to present themselves on camera, while having a bit of fun. The class this year is full of enthusiastic, energetic girls who are all keen to learn about media, and so here are two presentations from the group.

Media Studies Self-Portraits

At the beginning of Term 1, the 2009 Level 2 Media Studies class were given a self-portrait assignment. Individually, they had to create a 1-minute, edit-free video, to be submitted within the week, with paper work attached.

Pre-production: Before filming, the students completed a planning sheet, which included setting, character/s and props, shot size, camera movement and angles, and sound/dialogue. They could select people to assist them with production, like a camera operator or ‘actors’, and they had to organise a schedule, which included booking the camera, managing a crew and access to locations.

Production: Setting up the shot, waiting for the ‘actors’, the crew, the perfect light, the perfect moment, perfect sound conditions and evaluating whether the shot needed to be changed took longer than one minute. Most of the students rehearsed beforehand and there were technical details to sort out before the filming could begin.

Post-production: Once filming had finished and everyone had submitted their self-portraits, the ‘1-minutes’ were burned to disk. Students watched their work in class and then completed a self-evaluation form.

The self-portraits were a great way to start the year; they helped me to get to know the Level 2 Media Studies students, and they helped the students understand the technology and the process of producing a short film. Here are four selected submissions.

Media Studies Students Wow the Digivoice Crowd.

The Media Studies class at Tamaki College were part of the Digivoice show in the town. Their video was a big hit with the audience, with people queuing up to see it. This is their video, called Edu-Gate. The team were Francis, Mikaira and Junior.

Francis tells us more about it...

In our Level 2 Media Studies class, as part of the course outline we were to produce a documentary. As a class we came up with the topic of basing it on education.

In our group there was me (Francis Kolo) – Camera Operator, Mikaira Chan – Production Manager/Editor and Junior Mara – Director/Presenter.

Our documentary is called Edu-Gate, because we believe, as students of Tamaki College, that Education is the gateway to our futures.

We were also apart of The Digivoice Project, where we used our documentary as our ‘Voice’. We were one of many groups in the project, like The Eastside Young Mums group where their voice were scrapbooks. The exhibition, which was held on the 6th of September, was a successful event andwe had people lining up to view our documentary.
